Plans are being finalized for an open house and fly-in at the Marianna Municipal Airport on June 8th. Gates open for the public at 8am on Saturday. This years open house/fly-in is an opportunity for the citizens of Marianna and Jackson County to learn more about general aviation, the military history of this airport, and the rich heritage that makes our community such a special place to live, work, and play. There will be military and civilian aircraft, exhibits, vendors with food, and free aircraft rides for children 8 to 17. Jackson County Public Library is one of a-three(3) County Library in the Panhandle Public Library Cooperative system(PPLCS) which serves the residents of Calhoun, Holmes, and Jackson counties. PPLCS serves over 109,890 residents with a combined collection of approximately 200,000 items in its multi-county libraries. It was established in October 1992. There are 10 branches with the Marianna Library being the main one in Jackson County and the Blountstown being the main one in Calhoun County. The Altha branch is temporarily closed.
Have you always wanted to try your hand at Florida fishing? They offer license-free saltwater fishing on June1st and 2nd and license-free freshwater fishing on June 8th and 9th. During those 2 weekends a fishing license is not required for residents or visitors. They offer this during National Fishing and Boating week, (NFBW). Who knew there was a week for that? NFBW is a national celebration of fishing and boating, an event that highlights the importance of recreational boating and fishing in enhancing our quality of life and preserving our country’s natural beauty. Who needs a recreational hunting or fishing license or permit? Well basically everyone except on the above weekends. Florida residents and visitors are required to possess a Florida hunting, freshwater fishing or saltwater fishing license when engaged in fishing and hunting activities. Hope you catch a big one! October 10, 2018 is a date everyone in the Florida Panhandle remembers. Hurricane Michael hit our counties hard at a category 5. It was the 3rd strongest hurricane every recorded to hit the US. Almost 8 months later and we are still trying to rebuild. Most of us were without power for close to a month. So we have already bought generators and gas cans. However for those new to the area, this is a great time to buy one. Hurricane season starts this Saturday June 1st. The 2019 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday was passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. The sales tax holiday begins tomorrow, Friday May 31st and extends through Thursday June 6th. You can click the link below for more information.
