Christmas is still 5 months away however it will take that long to try and reach this year’s goal of 3,000 shoeboxes bought, filled, and shipped. Eastside Baptist Church in Marianna took on local management of Samaritan’s Purse, “Operation Christmas Child” about a decade ago. This year would be a record if they are able to collect the goal. They have a core group of volunteers. They started collecting as soon as they were finished with 2018 boxes. They are taking donations and volunteers to help fill the boxes. Each box costs $9 to ship. Each box has a few hygiene items, a stuffed loveable animal, school supplies, socks, and a toy. The boxes are for ages ranging from 2 to 14 years old.
The packers meet on Thursdays from 10am to 2pm. For more information please call the church at 850-536-2004.

Did you know Smokey the Bear was going to be 75? He was created in August of 1944, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest-running service advertising campaign in U.S. history. He is an American campaign and advertising icon created by the U.S. Forest Service with artist Albert Staehle. The Ad council, U.S. Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters employ Smokey the Bear to educate the public about the dangers of unplanned human-caused wildfires. In his 1st campaign “Smokey says~ Care will prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires.” It was 2001 that the slogan officially changed to “Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires.” According to the Ad Council, 80% of outdoor recreationalists correctly identified Smokey Bear’s image and 8 in 10 recognized the campaign. Fun fact: did you know that Smokey Bear’s name has always been intentionally spelled differently from the adjective “smoky?”

So impressed with how many groups are offering free backpacks and school supplies, many with fun activities too. I am sure even more events are out there, check with your local schools and hospitals. Remember Jackson County students are all getting free school supplies this year (past blog). Florida and Alabama are also offering tax free school shopping days for things you don’t get for free and clothes! For college students you also can get computers and text books if bought during the tax free periods. Read past post if you need details for that. Be sure to read under each of these photos and also follow up with the individual place to make sure the event is still going on and hasn’t been cancelled, postponed, or relocated.
